Peter Safran Talks Justice League and More.

DC

Every time James Gunn or Peter Safran step in front of a microphone, fans immediately start looking for clues about the future of the DCU.

This week was no different.

While attending the Supergirl event in Brazil, Peter Safran was asked about the Justice League and whether there were plans for the iconic team in the future. Predictably, some fans immediately began dissecting every word of his answer as if he had just dropped a major bombshell.

The reality?

He didn’t.

And honestly, he wasn’t going to.

Safran’s comments were exactly what anyone should have expected from the co-head of DC Studios standing on a red carpet promoting Supergirl.

He wasn’t there to unveil a ten year roadmap. He wasn’t there to announce Justice League. He wasn’t there to spoil future films that may still be years away.

He was there to promote Supergirl.

Yet some fans seem disappointed that he didn’t immediately reveal where the Justice League fits into the grand plan.

you know who I’m talking about

Why would he?

One thing people keep forgetting is that James Gunn and Peter Safran’s current contracts with Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly run through April 2027. That means we’re still well within the period where they’re actively building the foundation of the DCU.

If you’re running a shared universe, you don’t show every card in your hand on day one.

In fact, revealing too much would probably be a mistake.

Imagine if Marvel had announced Avengers: Endgame before Iron Man had even hit theaters. Part of the fun of a shared universe is watching the pieces come together. The audience gets introduced to characters, stories connect, relationships form, and eventually those threads converge into something bigger.

We know eventually, you head in that direction," but stated that DC is primarily focused on their currently announced slate until the time is right.”

That’s how these universes are supposed to work.

The DCU is still in the foundation-building phase.

Superman launched the universe.

Supergirl is about to expand it.

Lanterns is on the way.

The Brave and the Bold will introduce the DCU’s Batman.

Wonder Woman is being developed.

Additional projects continue to be announced as scripts are completed and stories are ready.

The point is simple: we’re still watching the building blocks being put into place.

Of course Gunn and Safran have discussed the Justice League.

Nobody realistically believes they took over DC Studios, created a shared universe, and never once talked about DC’s most famous superhero team.

The question isn’t whether they have plans.

The question is when they’re ready to reveal those plans.

And Safran’s answer basically tells us exactly that.

When the time comes, we’ll know.

That’s not dodging the question. That’s protecting the future of the franchise.

Fans sometimes act as though every project needs to be announced years before it happens. But keeping certain cards close to the vest allows DC Studios to adapt, adjust, and focus on the stories directly in front of them rather than constantly chasing announcements.

More importantly, it allows these characters to earn their place.

The Justice League shouldn’t just appear because fans are impatient.

It should feel like the culmination of everything that came before it.

We need to spend time with Superman.

We need to meet this universe’s Batman.

We need to see where Supergirl fits.

We need Lanterns to establish the cosmic side of the DCU.

We need Wonder Woman to arrive.

Then, when the Justice League finally assembles, it actually means something.

That’s why Safran’s comments shouldn’t be viewed as disappointing.

If anything, they should reassure fans that DC Studios isn’t rushing toward a finish line before the race has even started.

The DCU is still being built.

And no executive in his right mind is going to stand on a red carpet in Brazil and reveal every major plan they have through 2027 and beyond.

When it’s time to talk about the Justice League, Gunn and Safran will talk about the Justice League.

Until then, they’re focused on building a universe worth bringing together.
